چکیده

We review present understanding of Galactic free–free emission and its possible importance to CMB fluctuation measurements. Current results, from both " direct " observations in the microwave band and from Hα studies, suggest that this foreground does not represent a serious obstacle to mapping the CMB; however, this is based on limited information and we emphasize the need for more exhaustive studies. We also present some preliminary results based on our recent Hα observations near the South Pole CMB data sets. The fluctuation amplitude seen in Hα indicates that the detected CMB fluctuations are not significantly contaminated by free–free emission, at least if the diffuse gas is at a temperature of T ∼ 10 4 K. The three main sources of microwave emission from our Galaxy are synchrotron radiation, thermal dust emission and bremsstrahlung (free-free emission). Among these three, bremsstrahlung poses the greatest difficulty for cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations for two reasons: 1/ it dominates over the frequency range where the total Galactic emission is minimal, and hence where the majority of CMB experiments are performed, and 2/ it dominates only over a small range of frequencies (see Fig. 3 of Kogut et al. 1996a). Thus, it is the principal Galactic contaminant of many CMB experiments, but it cannot be traced by observing at either much

3 Free - Free Signal

This document provides a brief summary estimate of Galactic free-free emission and Hα emission and their relationship. Particular emphasis is placed on estimating the potential freefree emission in the region of significant confusion for CMB anisotropy measurements. Existing x-ray, ultraviolet and Hα emission provide limits on the radio free-free emission and vice versa. These limits are genera...

A Correlation between Balmer H α Emission and Infrared Cirrus

A 13×13 image of Balmer Hα emission at galactic latitude -65 is presented. Sensitivity is limited in part by confusion: the peak-to-valley anisotropy of the Hα surface brightness is ∼0.2 Rayleighs on angular scales of 0.1 to 1.0. The morphology of the Hα emission is similar to that of the 100 μm emission previously observed by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). A point-by-point compari...

Towards a free-free template for CMB foregrounds

A full-sky template map of the Galactic free-free foreground emission component is increasingly important for high sensitivity CMB experiments. We use the recently published Hα data of both the northern and southern skies as the basis for such a template. The first step is to correct the Hα maps for dust absorption using the 100 μm dust maps of Schlegel, Finkbeiner & Davis (1998). We show that ...

Mapping the Galactic Free - Free Foreground via Interstellar H α Emission

Recently completed Hα surveys of large portions of the sky can be used to create maps of the free-free intensity distribution at high Galactic latitude that are independent of the spectral fits to the CMB data. This provides an opportunity to test the accuracy of the spectral fitting procedures and to search for other sources of Galactic forground contamination that could be confused spectrally...

Identification of Spinning Dust in Hα–correlated Microwave Emission

CMB experiments commonly use maps of Hα intensity as a spatial template for Galactic free–free emission, assuming a power law Iν ∝ ν −0.15 for the spectrum. Any departure from the assumed free–free spectrum could have a detrimental effect on determination of the primary CMB anisotropy. We show that the Hα-correlated emission spectrum in the diffuse WIM is not the expected free–free spectrum at ...
